A Super Falcons striker, Francisca Ordega, has said that no country
would be a threat to the team at the 2014 edition of the African
Women’s Championship, hosted by Namibia.
In a chat with PREMIUM TIMES in Abuja on Thursday, the 20-year-old striker said the Falcons were not afraid to face any team, but acknowledged that no team was a pushover in football,
“We are going to bring back the cup. It is the dream of every player to make their country proud and to also be at the top level,” she said.
Ordega, who also plays for Sweden’s Damallsvenskan, has promised to do her best for a victorious outing,
“I will work with my team and do my best. I want to score goals and make the country proud, and it is possible by God’s grace,” she said.
Speaking about the team’s preparation towards the tournament, which will commence in nine days, Ordega said,“We are preparing well. Everything is okay. We are very serious. We know the task ahead; not only for the Nations Cup but also for the 2015 World Cup qualifier because we want to be there next year. We as a team are physically tough. Football is about using the brain. We train together and will try our best to find our way out.”
The team will depart for Namibia on Thursday, October 8 to start their campaign at the championship on Sunday, October 11 in Windhoek the country’s capital.
Nigeria is in Group A with host, Namibia, as well as Zambia and West African counterpart, Ivory Coast.
Nigeria, the all-time most successful team in the African Women’s Championship with eight titles since its inception in 1991, will play their first match at the 2014 edition against neighbour, Ivory Coast, on October 11, at 8pm at the Sam Nujoma Stadium in Windhoek.
